Lin Cheung: Pinch Me, I must be dreaming.

+ FULLYBOOKED +

Stone is real and unreal at the same time; the impossibility of its formation is laid bare in front of us, explained through physics and seen in the geology of the land. Yet its otherworldly textures and colours is suggestive and evocative of many things, prompting us to make sense of stone in our own individual worlds.

Participants will explore a moment of realisation - somewhere between dreaming and waking - through making in a material that is notoriously slow, hard and stubbornly unique. Join me on a small journey attempting to negotiate what and how we make catch up with the lightening speed of our thoughts.

Lin Cheung: "Pinned", brooch, 2019, rock crystal, 18ct gold and pearl pin

Lin Cheung is a jewellery artist from London. She graduated from the Royal College of Art with an MA in Goldsmithing, Silversmithing, Metalwork and Jewellery. She is Reader in Jewellery at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London.

Underpinned by a detailed knowledge of materials and processes, Lin’s distinctive approach to making offers a witty and poignant response to the human condition.

She has won several awards for her work including the The Arts Foundation Award for Jewellery in 2001 and The Herbert Hofmann Prize in 2018. She was a finalist for the BBC Radio 4 Woman’s Hour Craft Prize 2017 and is the 2018 recipient of The Françoise van den Bosch Award.

Daniela Malev: Two sides – one story.
Pin mechanisms and brooch back design

In the field of contemporary jewellery the brooch is a very common and also much discussed form of jewellery.

One of the special challenges of making a good brooch is to find an adequate solution for the pin which connects the piece securely to the body but goes beyond being a mere functional and invisible part of the backside. It should be an essential part of the brooch in terms of content and aesthetics.

Mechanism and attachment of a brooch hold a tremendous potential for the design of a brooch in its entirety and need to be developed with equal importance. This workshop will initiate and encourage a conscious approach to the design of the brooch back and its mechanisms. The participants are introduced to a variety of pin mechanisms and learn how to realize them technically. They will be guided through exercises on different needle techniques and ways of thinking about what a needle can be and how it can be solved. But moreover the participant will learn and understand the integration of the brooch back and the pin mechanism into the whole creative process of making a brooch.

The workshop teaches technical skills but moreover a new way of thinking: a holistic approach to the brooch.

Daniela Malev: Brooches

Daniela Malev is a jeweller and educator. Trained as a classical goldsmith in her hometown Dresden, Germany, she also holds a Master Craftman´s Certificate for Gold- and Silversmithing and a BA and MFA degree in Gemstone and Jewellery Design at the University of Applied Sciences Trier/Idar-Oberstein, Germany.

Her jewellery work is inspired by a deep sense of order behind all existence. She thinks of jewellery as a visual playground for asking questions or drawing connections between different things and subjects. Her work is shown in international exhibitions and presented by Charon Kransen Arts, New York.Daniela Malev has travelled a lot and likes to gather and exchange ideas and knowledge. She has lived, worked and studied abroad in the USA, Mexico and Italy and Spain.

One of her special fields of interest are brooch backs and pin mechanisms and their integration into the design of the whole brooch. She is convinced that mechanism and attachment of a brooch hold a tremendous potential for the design of a brooch in its entirety and need to be developed with equal importance. She gives lectures and workshops on this subject worldwide. Her workshops initiate and encourage a conscious approach to the design of the brooch back and its mechanisms. She is the author of the book “To The Point – pin mechanisms and brooch back design”.

Anna Rikkinen: Attire -

apparel, clobber [British slang], clothes, clothing, costumery, dress, duds, garments, gear, habiliment(s), habit [archaic], rags, raiment, rig, rigging, threads, toggery, togs, vestiary, vestments, vesture, wear, wearables, weeds

The first known use of attire was in the 13th century. Etymology: Middle English, from Anglo-French atirer to equip, prepare, attire, from a- (from Latin ad-) + tire order, rank, of Germanic origin; akin to Old English tīr glory, ornament.

Does jewellery need the body to exist? Do your need to wear it so that it can be called jewellery? When worn, how does it feel? Objects that are worn are things that accompany us and become part of our habitus. Emotions take place in the body and leave lasting effects on the body. In this workshop you discover, fine tune and connect with your body and the surrounding space. This workshop is about the expanded
field of contemporary jewellery. We will dwell in the world of body-related objects, historical clothing and other forms of decoration.

Karin Roy Andersson (SE)
Jewellery Artist and manager of the contemporary jewellery gallery Four

Karin Roy Andersson works with jewellery and with communication. The life of a piece starts with an idea or when experimenting with a material. When the finished piece meets an audience another process starts. Experiences, thoughts and associations are mixed and the objects develop. The intimate connection to a wearer and a body makes the relation to the recipient very special.

Since 2010 Karin Roy Andersson run the contemporary jewellery gallery Four in Göteborg. Four shows exhibitions with artists from all over the world and it is a platform for discussions about art, jewellery, work and inspiration. The aim is to communicate jewellery art to a broad audience. The gallery presents some of the highlights from the jewellery scene, showing both international and Swedish, well established and emerging artists. The ambition is to provide a diverse program interesting both for jewellery enthusiasts and visitors who are new to this art genre.
Karin Roy Andersson got her MFA at HDK – Academy of Design and Crafts, Gothenburg, Sweden in 2009 and since then she has prosecuted many different artistic projects and jewellery adventures; exhibitions, lectures and other jewellery related events.

Krister Gråhn (FI)
Sculptor

Krister Gråhn works with sculpting and installations. The techniques vary from different types on construction materials to paper and pen. Along with his own personal artistic practice he has been collaborating with other artists in the past few years. Working together in pairs brings different kind of challenge and creativity to the process. One has to combine differing aesthetic views and have an on-going dialogue of the meaning in order to achieve a satisfying result.
Krister Gråhn graduated from South Carelia Polytechnic, Imatra in 2001 and Academy of Fine Arts, Helsinki in 2005. Gråhn has had solo exhibitions around Finland and he has participated in several group exhibitions, both curated and artist group based, since 2001.

Since the beginning of his career Gråhn has also been active in different areas of the art field.  In Rajataide Art Association Tampere, he run a contemporary art gallery for young artists and was the chairman of the contemporary art magazine Puoli-lehti in 2008-2015. Gråhn has been cofounder in different artist groups and curated various exhibitions trying to develop new kinds of approaches to the audience.

Tarja Tuupanen (FI)
Jewellery artist and the chairwoman of Finnish Jewellery Art Association

Tarja Tuupanen has studied jewellery and stonework in Lappeenranta in South Carelia Polytechnic, Finland (BA 1999) and she graduated as MFA from Ädellab, Konstfack University College of Arts, Crafts and Design, (SE) in 2013. Since 1997 she has taken part in exhibitions internationally. Teaching and promoting her own professional field have been important, along with working as an artist. Tuupanen was one of the founding members of the Finnish Jewellery Art Association and she acted as the chairwoman in 2005-2013, and second time from 2020 onward. She has been teaching in Finland and she has hosted several workshops abroad in different institutions, most recently in China Academy of Arts in Hangzhou. She is a member of Hibernate-group.

Tarja Tuupanen´s artistic practise is dominated with one material, stone. For over 20 years she has been working with raw blocks of different minerals, synthetic korundum, or lately used marble tableware objects. The relationship to stone is so thorough that it becomes more than just a material to begin with. The work results as three dimensional objects for the body or to its surroundings in the context of contemporary jewellery, craft and contemporary art.
